Update to Moodle 4.5

On September 8, 2025, the Leuphana Moodle for College and Graduate School will be updated to version 4.5. This update will bring some changes, which we have summarised below.

We will discuss the upcoming changes in more detail at our September meeting of the Leuphana Moodle Network which will take place on Tuesday, 30 September, from 12:15 to 13:15. To participate in the event, simply enrol in the corresponding Moodle course (you must be logged in to Moodle). There, you will find the access details.

1. Removed Functions

Some functions are outdated and will have to be removed during the update.

1.1. Removed Activities

The following activities will no longer be available from 8 September:

Name Icon Explanation
Scheduler Icon of the "scheduler" (in German: "Planer") activity: a calendar symbol on a blue background With this activity, you could book appointments directly within Moodle courses.
OU Blog Icon of the activity "OU Blog": a megaphone and a piece of paper With this alternative form of the blog, you could integrate blogs as activities in the course.
Questionnaire Icon of the "Questionnare" (in German: "Befragung") activity: a stylised list of questions on a green background With this activity, you could create individualised questionnaires.

1.2. Removed Functions from the "Test" Activity

Change Explanation
Self-declaration at the “Test” activity (This function was already disabled and will now be removed permanently.) This function was used to request a self-declaration and health check via a pop-up before taking the test.
Archiving of open text questions in the “Test” activity The simple download of open questions via the corresponding menu option, as it was described in the handouts on this topic, is no longer possible. If you want to take a test via Moodle, please contact the Teaching Service: lehrservice@leuphana.de.
Multiple Choice questions in the “Test” activity The question type “All-or-Nothing” for multiple-choice questions will be removed. An evaluation of multiple-choice questions, where only the complete marking of all correct answers with 100% and any other answer with 0% is possible, will no longer be available.
Block “Quiz results” The function to display the results of a quiz as a ranking list in the block menu of a course will be removed.

2. New Features

There will be some changes, especially in the user interface. We have summarised the most important new features below.

2.1. Bulk editing

In the editing mode, you will now find the option “Bulk actions” in the top right corner.
If you use this action, you can select multiple sections or activities in the course and then hide, move, duplicate, or delete them. The actions are located in a new footer:
Screenshot of the course editing. Two activities are selected with a blue tick, others are not. At the bottom, there is a footer with the options "Select all", "Availability", "Duplicate", "Move", and "Delete" as well as the note "2 selected".
Thus, entire sections can also be duplicated now.

2.2. Changes to the Course Layout

  • The icons of the activities will be displayed more discreetly and smaller in the future (see screenshot under 2.1).
  • The separation of individual elements of a course by frames and lines has been revised to structure the course content more clearly.
  • In the course index, which can be unfolded on the left side, sections can be collectively collapsed.
  • In some course formats (tiles format and collapsed sections), individual activities can be easily indented to the right to illustrate the hierarchy of activities.
  • Text and media areas can now be given a title which will then appear in the course index. The title will no longer be the beginning of the text field in the course index. This will make the course index more concise.

2.3. Further Changes

  • Many functions, such as creating new content in the course, are now easier to access.
  • There will be additional options for creating reports.
  • The notifications will be revised, so that (especially) students may receive more notifications if they do not deactivate them.
  • The visibility of group memberships can now be set individually for each group.
  • The “Test” activity will receive various improvements in terms of usability, but also in terms of question types.

This list is intended to provide a rough overview of the most important changes and does not claim to be comprehensive. Some of the new features in Moodle 4.5 are still in the testing phase, so we cannot yet say whether they will be available or not. If you have any questions about the update, please contact lehrservice@leuphana.de or attend the introduction “News in Moodle 4.5” in the Leuphana Moodle Network on 30 September.
